Context

The Candyland-themed All Niter is the largest social event the student union hosts, kicking off the spring semester for over 3,000 attendees. My job was the foundation of the visual campaign: the characters, the world, and the colors that the rest of the team's posters and signage would build on.

Campus icons in a candy world

I researched Candyland before drawing anything, then filled the world with icons every student already knows. I wanted students to see their own campus inside the candy world and want to keep a piece of it.

The illustrations became a set of five keepsake enamel pins. I went through multiple iterations to land the set. One is Kermit hugging a giant marshmallow, a riff on the meme of Kermit hugging a phone. I knew people would recognize it and want it. Students collected the pins across the night through a scavenger hunt, with a make-your-own station alongside.

I gave everything thick outlines, warm faces, and a hand-drawn wobble. Candyland is supposed to be fun, so I stayed away from clean vector perfection and kept the drawings feeling like drawings.

Initial Sketches

Afterword

This project is the most fun I've had as a designer. I drew a world and then watched 3,000 people walk around inside it. A pin is a small thing, but it becomes someone's memorabilia from their time at UMD, and I love that my drawings get to be that.
